Converting in only three steps
F4V was Adobe's response to the growing demands for video quality on the internet. The format appeared in 2007 as a further development of the much better-known FLV format. F4V fully supports the modern H.264 codec, while FLV mostly used VP6 or Sorenson Spark (H.264 was not fully supported by FLV). At the time, this meant significantly better quality with the same file size.
The history of the F4V format
The history of F4V is closely linked to the rise and fall of Adobe Flash. In the 2000s, Flash dominated the internet: Flash intros could be found on almost every website, and games, animations and video players were based on Flash. Even YouTube relied on Flash in the beginning. F4V thus became the preferred format for high-resolution videos.
The turning point came in 2010 when Steve Jobs published an open letter entitled "Thoughts on Flash". In it, he explained why Apple would not support Flash on the iPhone. (In short: too high power consumption, security vulnerabilities, lack of adaptation to touchscreens). Other manufacturers followed suit and support for Flash declined rapidly. Soon, Google began to limit Flash support in its emerging Chrome browser.
HTML5 later took over the role of Flash. The new web standard could play videos directly in the browser without the need to install additional plugins. The MP4 format with the universal and efficient H.264 codec became the universal standard. Flash, or rather Flash Player, was finally discontinued completely by Adobe in 2020. Since then, all major browsers have completely blocked Flash content.
Converting F4V to MP4
Anyone who still finds F4V files on hard drives, CDs or other storage media today usually has remnants from this era. Old screencasts, archived websites or downloaded videos. Playing these files can sometimes be difficult. VLC should play most F4V files without any problems, but for sharing and for best compatibility, converting to MP4 format is a good option. With file-converter-online.com, conversion is easy. And, since F4V usually contains H.264 content, the quality after conversion is (almost) as good as before. Just follow the steps below.
A personal word of farewell to Flash, even though it was many years ago:
Looking back, I'm almost grateful to Steve Jobs. Flash was a security nightmare: it felt like there was a new critical update every month. The loading times were unreasonable: waiting minutes for an elaborate intro, only to finally be allowed to click "Skip intro". Does anyone else remember that?
But the games. The games were good. Really good. Not overloaded with effects, not garishly colourful. Instead, cleverly designed and challenging to play. You still had to think,
try, fail, try again. How many hours were lost in trial and error with the first instalments of Bloons Tower Defence…
